With back to back Nor’easter storms hitting us, One seems to forget it’s the start of seasonal allergies. However, if you suffer from them, you didn’t forget. Seasonal allergies, or allergic rhinitis, will cause great suffering and sniffles to a large population. What is happening is an over reaction of the immune system to different allergens including, but not limited to; weed, mold, grass or spore pollen, pet dander, leaves, etc. Aside from sniffles, suffers may have itchy, burning, watery eyes, swollen nose mucous and discharge, ear and sinus infections, intense headaches and more. Most of these people will run to the drug store for antihistamines, which will give temporary relief. However, more and more people are turning to acupuncture to treat their seasonal allergies. We spoke of Acupuncture often on this site and what it can help. Infertility, headaches, smoking cessation, etc. Here is yet another condition Acupuncture treats. And there is literature backup. In a study that was published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers examined 422 people with positive tests for pollen allergies who also had allergic nasal symptoms, like a runny nose. The study participants reported their symptoms as well as what meds they used to treat them. Then the researchers divided the participants into three groups. One received 12 acupuncture treatments and took antihistamines as needed. The second group received 12 fake acupuncture treatments. (These were needles placed at random, non-meaningful points in the body). This group also took antihistamines as needed. The last group took only antihistamines for symptoms. After two months the researchers asked the participants about their symptoms and how much medication they used. The patients who received the real acupuncture treatments with antihistamines showed a greater improvement in their allergy symptoms and less use of antihistamines compared to the other two groups.
