The treatment of arthritic knees with physical therapy is something we often do at Breakthrough Wellness Center. These patients are initially hesitant to get treatment. This is because, mostly they avoid movements that can cause their pain to increase. What they don’t realize is, when you don’t move arthritic knees, the pain and stiffness will only get worse. What is arthritic knees? Osteoarthritis of the knees is a progressive disease that causes inflammation and degeneration of the joint. This condition worsens over time. The whole knee joint, including ligament, bone, cartilage, and muscle, is affected. The cause can range from a former knee injury, being overweight for many years, level of ones physical activity level, being sedentary, and more. Pain occurs when the cartilage covering the bones of the knee joint wears down. This narrows the space between the bones and causes friction. Because the knee is a weight-bearing joint, your activity level, and the type and length of your activities usually have a direct impact on your symptoms. Symptoms are; worsening pain with activities, including climbing up stairs, getting up from a seated position, and popping noises. These symptoms do not occur suddenly or all at once, but instead they develop gradually over time. Sometimes individuals do not recognize they have osteoarthritis because they cannot remember a specific time or injury that caused their symptoms. Physical therapy can help arthritic knees in many ways. This will include, increasing range of motion of the knee to reduce the stiffness. Strengthening the muscles around your knee will be an essential part of your rehabilitation program. Individuals with Osteoarthritis who adhere to strengthening programs have been shown to have reduced pain and an improved overall quality of life. Manual therapy: Our PT is skilled in manual, or hands on therapy. She will gently move and mobilize your muscles and joints to improve their motion, flexibility, and strength.
