What’s brain aerobics? Dr. Xin, our physical therapist, will have our patients doing aerobic activity at a certain point of their treatment. This is usually towards the “active” part of therapy and is designed to strengthen the patients cardiovascular health while also strengthening the muscles. This is probably common knowledge with the general public. What is probably not common knowledge is that aerobic exercise helps keep the brain young! Researchers at The Harvard Medical School recently published an article called “Aerobic exercise is the key to your Head, just as it is for your Heart.” In this article it was concluded that aerobic movement was the best way to lift your mood, improve your memory, and protect the brain against age-related cognitive decline. Simple aerobics like fast walking, swimming, or biking, even for 45 minutes, can alleviate depression. Another article, this one in The Journal of Physical Therapy Science, also praised aerobic exercise for the brain. It noted that aerobic workouts can help a person feel less stressed by reducing the levels of the body’s natural stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol. Cortisol is the villain that, when increased, can cause the “spare tire” around our waists.
