Working with a diverse patient age range in the office, many different physical problems arise. With the older population, a common question is; what kind of knee injections are best to relieve knee pain. At Breakthrough Wellness Center, one of the MANY services we offer is knee injections. What sets us apart is, we will incorporate physical therapy and other disciplines to ensure your knee heals the best as it can. The injection we best prefer to perform is Hyaluronic Acid. First off, hyaluronic acid is not technically a medication. It is more of a natural substance that will act as a lubricant and a shock absorber. We have it in our joints but lose it as we age. These knee injections help return the joint to better mobility and less pain. The healthier the knee, the better the hyaluronic acid knee injections will work. If there is osteoarthritis in the knee (the most common form of arthritis) the injections will lessen the inflammation and pain, though the motion will need to be worked on with physical therapy. Generally, the knee injections are given once a week for 3 weeks for full effect. We have patients who say they feel they have the knees of a 20 year old after the series of knee injections are performed. Usually when Hyaluronic acid knee injections are performed, another type of procedure called Arthrocentesis is first done. This involves removing fluid from the knee joint with a hollow needle. This is done so hyaluronic acid can be injected in as a replacement. However, studies have shown that this removal will sometimes take pressure off the knee joint and help greatly with the pain. Dr. LaCap, our medical doctor is well versed with knee injections. Combining it with physical therapy, Acupuncture, and Chiropractic, our patients show great results and are happily on their feet minus the pain.
