Night eating is something that was taboo growing up. If you eat at night before bed you will have nightmares. You will not sleep well and have stomach pains. And the biggest one: you will gain weight. So it’s not surprising night eating got a bad rap. However, you can actually lose weight night eating before bed. What matters is the kind of food you eat. Example, you should eat a bowl of spaghetti before bed, but only if you’re running a marathon or other intense race the following morning. So, what do we eat before bed to lose weight. First off, research has shown that the optimal time is 30 minutes before going to sleep. I understand that hitting that 30 minute mark may be tough. Basically if you’re ball parking it, you will be fine. The key food to eat before bed to lose weight is protein. This is because you are not spiking insulin which will store as fat. Protein actually does the opposite in helping to burn stored carbs while sleeping. Not all proteins are created equal. Chicken, turkey, pork, Greek yogurt, and cottage cheeses are best. While fish is inherently good for you, it can spike some insulin levels, so not at night. Meat can do the same. If you’re eating yogurt, always make sure it is Greek strained and plain. Lots of the commercial shelf yogurts are loaded with sugar and will have the opposite effect. Same with cottage cheese. So basically avoid carbs at night as that will reverse the weight loss process. Personally, protein shakes are my favorite night eating snack before bed.
You can also eat some good fats before bed like olive oil with your chicken as that will also reduce insulin spiking and turn on the weight loss generator.
