More and more, patients talk to me about anxiety treatment. It’s no secret that anxiety is on the rise. I always talk to my younger patients about the days in the 1970’s when I was in high school. We didn’t have computers or cell phones. Beepers weren’t even around yet. They would look at me in awe and confusion. “How did you meet up with people?” That was the most comm
on question. We just said things like, “meet me at the movies at 7:30” and would show up. Simple as that. Today with our smart phones, tablets and other gadgets, meeting people and getting information has become easier. However, with this barrage of info, comes an increase of daily anxiety. We suddenly find it difficult to decompress, relax, or just plain “hide” for a bit. Alson with this, there has been an increase of medications for anxiety, and questionable side effects. So can something natural like Acupuncture be a good anxiety treatment? The answer is yes. Anxiety can manifest in different ways. Physically, such as muscle pain, or increased heart beat. Mental, such as depressing thoughts. Behavior, such as increased aggression. And emotional, such as anger or fear. Traditional acupuncture anxiety treatment, focuses on the imbalances related to the heart and kidneys. Acupuncture uses points around the heart, spleen, kidney and ear to reduce anxiety symptoms. In a very recent edition of CNS: Neuroscience and Therapeutics, a study conclusively showed that acupuncture is comparable to cognitive-behavioral therapy, or CBT. A March 2013 study published in the Journal of Endocrinology, showed that stress levels were lower in rats after they received electric acupuncture. (Eshkevari, Permaul, and Mulroney). Depression, which is in the anxiety family, was also shown to be countered with acupuncture. (Please see previous article on Acupuncture and depression).
