How does Acupuncture work for pain relief and other conditions.

Lots of my patients know that Acupuncture relieves pain.  However many don’t know how.  They often ask, how does Acupuncture work for pain relief and other conditions.  Let’s start with the simple.   Acupuncture begins with the insertion of extremely fine needles into the skin at specific points. This may relieve pain by releasing endorphins, the body’s natural pain-killing chemicals. This affects the part of the brain that governs serotonin, a brain chemical involved with mood.  As a chiropractor, I see lots of lower back pain.  Sending my patients to Yoosan Lee, our acupuncturist has yielded some great results.  A recent review of 22 studies showed that acupuncture relieves pain in the lower back.  It helped people who especially suffered from chronic lower back pain.  This is the pain that has been around for a while, as opposed to acute, or recent pain. Part of the reason it is effective with lower back pain is due to the way acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system.  This action may trigger the release of chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and the brain. These chemicals may alter the experience of pain, or produce bodily changes that promote a sense of well-being, as mentioned above.  In the same series of events, it can also release the bodies natural opioids.  This will help the patient get a better nights sleep.  Finally, by changing brain chemistry, it is altering the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones. Neurotransmitters either stimulate or dampen nerve impulses. Neurohormones can affect the function or activity of an organ in the body, These neurotransmitters, when stimulated correctly, can reduce pain signals.  Much like how a TENS unit works.  So, to better see how acupuncture relieves pain, make an appointment with our Acupuncturist San Lee.  As always, he will sit down with you to discuss your pain, and whether he can help you with it.  It is a very detailed consultation, that is also free!  So call Breakthrough Wellness Center today to make yours!
